England mourns Wolves legend Bert Williams

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers FC goalkeeper Bert Williams, who made 420 appearances for the West Midlands side and won 24 caps for England, has died at the age of 93.

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and England goalkeeper Bert Williams has passed away at the age of 93.

A legendary figure for Wolves, Williams joined the club from Walsall FC in 1945 and went on to make 420 appearances in a 14-year stay, lifting the FA Cup in 1949 and winning the English title in 1953/54. On the international stage, he collected 24 caps for England and played at the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2010, Williams was England's oldest living international at the time of his death.

"As a young football fan who used to read about the achievements of that all-conquering Wolves team of the 1950s, it was an honour and a privilege to have been able to meet Bert on so many occasions since I arrived at the club in 2007," commented Wolves chairman Steve Morgan. "Legend is a word which may be overused these days, but in the case of Bert Williams it simply doesn't do him justice. He will be sadly missed at Molineux but will never, ever be forgotten."
