UEFA President thanks Poland for EURO 2012

Michel Platini has visited Poland where he met the Polish President Bronisław Komorowski and expressed his pride at the country's successful co-hosting of UEFA EURO 2012.

UEFA President Michel Platini has visited Poland, where he met the country's President Bronisław Komorowski and thanked him and his people for the successful co-hosting of UEFA EURO 2012.

Poland and Ukraine staged a splendid tournament last summer, with the memorable action on the field matched by the festival atmosphere off it. "Poland and Ukraine did very well as far as the organisation of EURO 2012 is concerned," said Mr Platini. "They lifted the bar very high.

"I am grateful to the Polish people for their spontaneity, hospitality and love for football," the UEFA President added. "I came here to thank not only the President, but also the Polish Prime Minister and sports minister, the mayors of the four host cities [Gdansk, Poznan, Warsaw and Wroclaw], all of the volunteers and many others who also deserve praise.

"It is not easy to organise such a big event, but Poland and Ukraine managed to do it. The matches were great, the new stadia looked marvellous and the fans also gave great support to their teams. I was, and I am, still very proud."

Mr Komorowski thanked Mr Platini and UEFA for their trust and assistance, especially in preparations for the tournament. "UEFA EURO 2012 had a good flavour and we are hungry for more – we would like to organise other major sports events," he said. Mr Platini assured him that the facilities and infrastructure are now available for that wish to be fulfilled.

Mr Platini presented Mr Komorowski with a replica of the Henri Delaunay Cup – the UEFA European Championship trophy. The UEFA President was accompanied during his visit to meet Mr Komorowski by the president of the Polish Football Federation (PZPN), Zbigniew Boniek, who was his team-mate at Italian club Juventus.
