New UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin received a rousing reception at the headquarters of the Football Association of Slovenia (NZS) on Friday following his election at UEFA's Extraordinary Congress in Athens.

The 48-year-old Slovenian was welcomed by loud applause and congratulations from staff as he arrived at the offices of the NZS, where he had served as president since 2011.

After shaking hands with each employee, Mr Čeferin was presented with a Slovenian national team shirt bearing the signatures of members of staff and the number 42 – representing the tally of votes he received from UEFA's member associations, compared to 13 for fellow candidate Michael van Praag of the Netherlands.

The Ljubljana native then posed for a photo with the entire NZS staff before holding a brief press conference with Slovenian media on the state of the country's national association and the progress of football within the country.

Mr Čeferin, who became UEFA's seventh President when he won Wednesday's election in Athens, will next travel to the headquarters of European Football's governing body on Tuesday for a series of meetings.
