UEFA announced today that it has awarded the pay-television rights to the 2012-15 UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League to both ESPN International and FOX Sports Latin America for exploitation in Central and Latin America. The packages do not include Brazil which will be tendered separately.
The combination of the broadcasters' channels will generate significant match choice and coverage of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. The two partners will each guarantee two live games per UEFA Champions League matchnight and at least one live UEFA Europa League game from each kick-off slot on their channels every matchweek.
TV coverage will be primarily on the regional ESPN Latin America network with complementary coverage on ESPN+, ESPN2 and ESPN HD. The FOX Sports channel will be the focus of the FOX distribution, with FOX Sports+, FOX Sports HD and FOX Sports Premium also being used to achieve additional live and delayed coverage each matchweek.
In line with UEFA's platform neutral approach, the two competitions will be broadcast via internet, mobile and television on both ESPN and FOX Sports. ESPN coverage will be via ESPN Play broadband networks, www.espndeportes.com and www.espnsoccernet.com. FOX Sports coverage will be through www.foxsportsla.com.
Both parties also acquired the right to show coverage of the UEFA Europa League in the Caribbean, the UEFA Champions League rights having been acquired by FOX Sports in a previous tender.
Commenting on the award of these rights in the region, Guy-Laurent Epstein, marketing director of UEFA Events SA, said: "UEFA is delighted to announce the extension of its relationship with FOX Sports in Central and Latin America as well as welcoming ESPN back as a partner in the region. By confirming these deals, we can ensure that Europe's best club football is delivered on the best pan-regional platform for sports fans in the territory."
There was also significant interest from free-to-air broadcasters in the market. UEFA will now seek to enhance coverage of the competitions by continuing to pursue these opportunities. Further announcements will be made in due course.
