The 2012/13 UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe Award, launched for the first time this season, will be presented to the winner by the UEFA President, Michel Platini, on 5 September 2013 at around 13.00CET at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland. The three shortlisted nominees, in alphabetical order, are: Nadine Angerer (GER – 1. FFC Frankfurt/Brisbane Roar), Lena Goessling (GER – VfL Wolfsburg) and Lotta Schelin (SWE - Olympique Lyonnais).
A jury composed of 18 journalists, each committed to supporting women’s football, and selected by the European Sports Media Group (ESM), have voted for the shortlist of the top three players and will cast their votes again to determine the winner who will be presented with the award on 5 September. The initial shortlist of the top ten players was provided by the coaches of the teams taking part in UEFA Women’s EURO 2013, as well as the coaches of the clubs which participated in last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals.
Prior to the award ceremony, the draws for the round of 32 and round of 16 of the 2013/14 UEFA Women’s Champions League will take place, starting at 12.30CET in the same location. The draws will be conducted by UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino and UEFA Executive Committee member and chairwoman of the UEFA Women’s Football Committee, Karen Espelund.
For the purpose of the draw for the round of 32, an equal number of clubs (16) are seeded and unseeded, in accordance with the club coefficient ranking established at the beginning of the season. The titleholder will be the top seed. The draw respects the following principles, in accordance with the competition regulations:
• Clubs from the same association may not be drawn against each other.
• Winners and runners-up from the same group may not be drawn against each other.
• The seeded teams must play the return leg at home.
The round of 32 matches will take place on 9/10 and 16/17 October 2013. The draw to determine the pairings for the round of 16 will be conducted directly after the draw for the round of 32. At this stage of the competition, no teams are seeded and the first team drawn will play its first match at home against the second team drawn. The set match dates are 9/10 and 13/14 November 2013.
The 2013/14 season sees a total of 54 teams competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, representing 46 nations. Thirty-two teams, the domestic champions ranked 15 to 46, started the competition in the qualifying round, whereas the top two in the eight highest-ranked nations and the champions of the next six qualified directly to the round of 32.
The draws will be streamed live on UEFA.com. Media representatives wishing to attend the draws and the award ceremony are requested to apply via email to email@example.com with “Women’s Draw” in the subject header prior to Wednesday 4 September midday.
