Working towards a more inclusive environment for European football management
 

Background

UEFA is committed to influencing the culture of football organisations and to progressively open them at all levels to a wider range of people with different origins and backgrounds. Captains of Change is an innovative project launched by UEFA to strive for a more inclusive environment, fostering and further developing diversity within the management of football in Europe. Former French international player Christian Karembeu is the ambassador for this new programme, and the UEFA global ambassador of diversity and change, Clarence Seedorf, also supports this initiative.

Objectives

The Captains of Change participants are encouraged to show their responsibility and leadership qualities like a team captain, with the goal of affecting real change within football organisations. As the programme is highly action oriented, participants are accepted on the basis of a draft diversity project which presents how he/she intends to encourage diversity within his/her organisation's culture. The final projects included in the programme are selected from UEFA's 54 member associations and partner bodies working with minorities in football.

Implementation

Those individuals who become Captains of Change will be trained to develop skills and knowledge which is useful for the implementation of their projects, which through these national and local initiatives will foster diversity in their respective football organisations. During this process, consultations will take place between the participant, his/her line manager/CEO or general secretary, a UEFA representative and a member of the programme team. UEFA will also financially contribute to the implementation of the programmes across Europe.
