Climate action & advocacy

Our goal is to reduce football’s carbon footprint and to partner with organisations promoting climate protection.

UEFA Carbon Footprint Calculator

From our member associations to leagues and clubs, the European football community can be a part of the solution to carbon emissions. To ensure our sport plays a driving role in climate action and advocacy across the continent, we provide tailored support to our member associations, helping them develop and implement strategies aimed at reducing football’s carbon emissions.

UEFA carbon footprint calculator

In March 2024, we launched the UEFA Carbon Footprint Calculator – an online tool that allows anyone involved in European football to calculate, assess and act on carbon emissions related to mobility, purchased goods and services, facilities and logistics.

Based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol methodology and validated by a third party, the calculator is the result of a two-year collaboration with 24 football organisations and external advisors. It is fully aligned with the principles of the European Union Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Our aim is to establish a single approved means of measuring football’s carbon emissions, bringing greater consistency, transparency and comparability to carbon emission data within the game.

Advocacy

We work closely with the European Commission to capitalise on the reach and visibility of our competitions to increase public awareness of energy-saving and climate action initiatives.

“Football brings our continent and our planet together. To keep enjoying our favourite game, we need to win the fight against climate change, as a team.”

Frans Timmermans, European Commission executive vice-president for the European Green Deal

Most recently, we produced a joint UEFA-EC television ad campaign – #EveryTrickCounts – in which former Ballon d’Or winner Luís Figo, Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon and French duo Delphine and Estelle Cascarino use an array of footballing tricks to show how simple changes in our daily lives can make a big difference in the fight against climate change. The advertisement was shown at all our men’s and women’s club and national team competition matches.

We encourage everyone involved in European football to support organisations, either in their local communities or nationally, who are committed to climate action and advocacy.
